From Workbasket Magazine, January 1955 Size 30 mercerized crochet thread and a number 9 steel crochet hook was used to make this doily set. The large doily is about 12 inches across the smaller one about 91/2 inches.
Abbreviations: Ch (chain); st (st); sc (single crochet); dc (double crochet); sl st (slip stitch); sk (skip); lp (loop); sp (space); p (picot); dp (double picot); tr (treble); rnd (round).

Repeat from * around, ending with 1 p, sl st in top of ch 3. Rnd 13: Sl st to dc, ch 3, * 1 p, sk 1 p, sc between dp, sk 1 p, sc between dp, * (1 dp, sk 2 p, sc between dp) twice, 1 dp, sk 1 p, sc between dp, 1 p, sk 1 dc, dc in next dc. Repeat from * around, ending with 1 p, sl st in top of ch 3. Rnd 14: * 1 dp, sk 2 p, sc between dp. Repeat from * around, sl st in base of first p. Rnd 15: * Ch 6, sk 1 dp, sc in sc. Repeat from * around. Rnd 16: * Ch 6, sk ch lp, sc 1n sc. Repeat from * around. Rnd 17: Sl st into lp of previous rnd, * ch 8, sc in lp. Ch 8, sc in same lp, ch 8, sc in next lp. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 4 tr in sl st. The thread is now in position to begin next rnd. Rnd 18: * Ch, 8, sc in next lp. Repeat from * around ending with ch 4, tr in ch 4. Rnd 19: Repeat rnd 18. Rnd 20: Repeat rnd 18. Rnd 21: Repeat rnd 18, ending with ch 8, sl st in beginning. This completes one ruffle.
For Double Ruffle: In rnd 15 and 16 two rnds of ch 6 lps were formed. The first ruffle has just been finished. Now join thread in free ch 6 lp and repeat from rnd 17 through rnd 21.
Make 2 for set.
Large Doily - Repeat first seven rnds of small doily. Rnd 8: Ch 3, 2 dc in next dc, dc in each of next 5 dc, * ch 1, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, dc in each of next 5 dc, repeat from * around, ending with ch 1, sl st in top of ch 3. Rnd 9: Ch 3, 2 dc in next dc, dc in each of next 6 dc, * ch 1, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, dc in each of next 6 dc. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 1, sl st in top of ch 3. Rnd 10: Ch 3, 2 dc in next dc, dc in each of next 7 dc, * ch 1, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, dc in each of next 7 dc. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 1, sl st in top of ch 3. Rnd 14: Sl st to dc, ch 3, dc in each of next 5 dc, * 1 dp, sk 1 p, sc between dp, (1 dp, sk 2 p, sc between dp) twice, 1 dp, sk dc, dc in each of next 6 dc. Repeat from * around, ending with 1 dp, sc in top of ch 3. Rnd 15: Sl st to dc, ch 3, dc in each of next 4 dc, * 1 p, sk 1 p, sc between dp, (1 dp, sk 2 p, sc between dp) 3 times, 1 p, sk 1 dc, dc in each of next 5 dc. Repeat from * around, ending with p, sl st in top of ch 3. Rnd 16,: Sl st to dc, ch 3, dc over each of 3 dc, * (1 dp, sk 2 p, sc between dp) 3 times, 1 dp, sk dc, dc in each of next 4 dc. Rnd 23: Sc in ch lp of previous rnd, * ch 8, sc in lp, ch 8, sc in same lp, ch 8, sc in next lp. Repeat from around, ending with ch 4, tr in first sc. This brings thread in position to begin next rnd. Rnd 24: Ch 8, sc in next lp. Repeat around. Rnds 25, 26, 27: Repeat rnd 24. Join and cut.
For Double Ruffle: Join to free ch 6 lp. Repeat from rnd 23 through 27.
